As of September 2008, there are 39 /8s remaining in the IPv4 free address pool. The Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) have collectively allocated about ten to twelve /8s of IPv4 address space each year, on average. If that trend continues unchanged, by mid-2012 the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) and the other RIRs will no longer be able to allocate large new blocks of IPv4 address space. This scenario assumes that demand does not increase – which is unlikely, given the ever increasing number of Internet-enabled devices. This scenario also assumes no industry panic (hoarding, withholding, etc.), no Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) or RIR policy changes, and no other external factors influencing address space allocations, any of which could push the IPv4 depletion date earlier. Once IPv4 address space is depleted, Internet growth cannot be sustained without adopting IPv6.
"The new Internet protocol, IPv6, significantly improves the function and commercial use of the Internet in terms of scalability, security, mobility and network management," said Kazuhiro Gomi, CTO of NTT America and vice president of the NTT Communications Global IP Network. "Even with the current economic situation we continue to see traffic growth above 70% annually. With more and more people using the Internet, more mobile devices accessing the Internet and social networking sites becoming ever more popular, the time to upgrade to the new Internet protocol is now. We are very pleased to have an Internet exchange partner like Switch and Data, a company that shares our vision for IPv6 and can help foster its adoption in the United States."
"IPv6 connectivity is critical for U.S. firms conducting international business, acquiring or merging with foreign companies, and working with foreign governments, and we’re excited that NTT America is rapidly growing its network with customers across our footprint," said Ernie Sampera, chief marketing officer for Switch and Data. "Our long experience offering IPv6 peering on our PAIX® Internet exchange combined with our broad footprint of sites and high customer densities make Switch and Data the natural partner to help NTT America achieve its growth objectives."
NTT America reports demand for IPv6 services from downstream Internet service providers, universities, research institutions, next generation application providers and organizations that focus on wireless technologies. The company already counts a number of customers in Switch and Data’s facilities. NTT America’s award winning IPv6 transit service is available in native, tunneled or dual stack modes on different interfaces up to 10GigE.
An early adopter of IPv6, Switch and Data has incorporated IPv6 services into its Layer 2 PAIX® Internet exchanges at all sites. Customers can implement IPv4, IPv6, or dual IPv4/IPv6 peering using a single peering port with no extra charges and no special usage or setup fee.
