CampusEAI Consortium Expands Capacity for SaaS Applications and Hosting for Educational Institutions with Switch and Data in Cleveland

Aug 14, 2009

TAMPA, Fla. -- August 4, 2009 -- Switch and Data (NASDAQ: SDXC), a leading provider of network neutral data center and Internet exchange services, announced today that CampusEAI Consortium, a global, not-for-profit IT services and consulting provider, is expanding capacity to support its myCampus software-as-a-service (SaaS) Web 2.0 portal solution and managed hosting services in Switch and Data's Cleveland site. More than 260 members, including many of the world's most renowned educational institutions, belong to the CampusEAI Consortium. These members leverage CampusEAI Consortium's outsourced services such as the myCampus Portal and myCampus Web Content Management to reduce expense and improve time to market. CampusEAI has expanded its capacity in Switch and Data's Cleveland data center to scale its infrastructure for growth.

The CampusEAI Consortium helps its members reduce the cost and increase the speed of providing information technology services by facilitating the development, exchange, delivery, and support of community-source software and digital content. The organization was founded in 2003 by 14 original institutions as a response to increasing IT budget cuts, resource constraints and needs of incoming Internet-savvy students.

The CampusEAI Consortium has developed the myCampus Web 2.0 enterprise portal for institutions of higher education and K-12 schools. It provides an integrated portal for students, faculty, administration and alumni to manage academic and social information, use course tools and community message boards and even register for classes. CampusEAI Consortium provides comprehensive 24x7x365 hosting capabilities for myCampus. With this service, members leverage the Consortium's technical expertise and IT infrastructure to help reduce implementation timeframe and upfront infrastructure costs, as well as eliminating ongoing implementation and management headaches.

"Building and operating our own infrastructure for our application allows us to customize the environment for the needs of our members. We have optimized parameters such as firewall settings and maintenance windows for the needs of the educational community," explained Anjli Jain, Executive Director - CampusEAI Consortium. "Switch and Data gives us a secure, reliable, scalable place to house our infrastructure with access to multiple bandwidth providers to move our members' data in and out of our cloud environment."

By centralizing hosting and investments in equipment (i.e., routers, security appliances, catalyst switches), hundreds of members of the CampusEAI Consortium can share redundant, high-speed WAN connections and terabytes of storage. This also reduces the per-service cost, while providing an enhanced monitoring and notification infrastructure and access to a 24/7 operations staff to ensure uptime and reliability.

"We are pleased to work with CampusEAI to provide its members with the facilities for their SaaS campuses," said Ernie Sampera, Senior Vice President and CMO for Switch and Data. "Educational institutions are under pressure to manage increasing student populations and shrinking budgets. The data aggregation and distribution needs of the educational community are growing quickly and we give the Consortium access to world class facilities without needing to tie up precious capital."

Switch and Data is a sponsor of the CampusEAI Consortium's "Future of IT Symposium" at EDUCAUSE 2009 November 3-6, 2009 in Denver.
