Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange Attracts Leading Network and Cloud Services Companies

Global deployment extended to three new markets; online portal connects buyers and sellers of Ethernet-based services

Oct 27, 2010

FOSTER CITY, CA — October 27, 2010 — Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a leading provider of global data center services, today announced it has added 16 new customers to its Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange™, a global, network-neutral service that improves quality and removes the cost and complexity of facilitating commercial transactions between Layer 2 Ethernet networks. Equinix has also extended the service to three new European markets—Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris—and launched a new online portal, called Marketplace(SM) for Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange, that connects buyers and sellers of Ethernet-based services globally.

Equinix welcomed 16 additional customers to its Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange that now totals 38 participants. New customers include 2ConnectAllstreamFiberLightGlobal Telecom & TechnologyGlowpointInternet SolutionsIP NetworksLayer42MegapathNimbus ExchangePacnetPeerless NetworkSSE TelecomVirtela,Voxel and XO. As well as carrier customers, Equinix cloud services customers are leveraging the Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange to increase revenue by delivering an improved end-user experience through a more scalable and reliable service offering.

The Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange was the first service of its kind to be deployed globally and today operates in 10 strategic markets: Amsterdam, Chicago, Frankfurt, London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Silicon Valley, Tokyo and Washington, DC. Expansion plans through Q2 2011 include the addition of 10 markets: Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Hong Kong, Miami, Seattle, Singapore, Sydney, Toronto and Zurich. In addition to the Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange, Equinix’s 3,700 customers today have access to more than 100 Ethernet carriers for private connection.

“Carrier-neutral providers such as Equinix, with data centers strategically located in high growth markets around the world, have a clear competitive advantage that enables a faster time-to-market when rolling out exchange services in new regions,” said Roopashree Honnachari, senior industry analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “The fact that Equinix already has service providers and enterprise customers colocated at its facilities means carriers have immediate and convenient access to a broad customer base.”

Marketplace for Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange, an online portal for connecting buyers and sellers of Ethernet-based services, is now available. Carriers can promote wholesale Ethernet services to other carriers by creating profiles, listing qualifications, uploading ‘lit building’ lists (in map or list views), and responding to requests for quotes. Marketplace can also be used to shop for Ethernet services from other carriers, request and manage quotes for services, and search to see which carriers serve specific locations. The time it takes to provision carrier Ethernet services takes only a few days through Equinix vs. months to provision single solutions.

“In addition to providing the speed, quality and cost advantages of Ethernet-based services, carriers can now offer our 3,700 customers the ability to easily transact business anywhere in the world,” said Jarrett Appleby, chief marketing officer at Equinix. “With the Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange and Marketplace, the costly and time-consuming effort of building one-off solutions no longer exists for the Ethernet services industry, which Ovum expects to grow to $40 billion by 2015.”
