Equinix Extends Digital Edge in Canberra with Launch of Equinix Fabricâ„¢

On-demand interconnection service enables agile and secure access to trusted hybrid multicloud services throughout Australia and globally

May 4, 2021

SYDNEY, Australia, May 5, 2021 –  Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the world’s digital infrastructure company™, today announced the availability of Equinix Fabric in the CA1 Canberra International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centre. This move enables organisations, including Federal Government agencies, to instantly connect to multiple clouds and networks to build an agile and secure hybrid multicloud infrastructure. Governments can also use the Equinix Fabric for inter-government collaboration.

To meet the fast-growing, on-demand interconnection needs of organisations in Canberra, Equinix Fabric allows any customer to connect to any other company’s distributed infrastructure on Platform Equinix®, including those in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Government agencies based in Canberra, can now leverage the power of Platform Equinix to privately interconnect clouds, networks and services to highly secure data centres in key metros across Australia. They can also set up direct connectivity with international and local cloud service providers, including Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, SAP Cloud and others; all major network service providers like Telstra, Optus and Vocus; as well as Australia’s Intra-government Communications Network (ICON).

Highlights / Key Facts

  • By bringing together cloud service providers with companies and government agencies looking to adopt cloud services and enabling them to establish private, high-performance connections, Equinix Fabric facilitates secure hybrid multicloud solutions and supports the extensive government presence in the capital of Australia.
  • Regardless of where organisations are in their digital transformation, keeping data secure is dependent on direct interconnection that delivers high performance, low-latency access to clouds, networks and integration partners. As the world’s digital infrastructure company, Equinix operates mission critical colocation environments that can privately connect to major public and private cloud providers, enabling organisations, including government agencies to store their data proximate to cloud providers for security and regulatory compliance. This architecture also offers a much richer user experience as government and citizen centric systems frequently require more control than typical Internet based platforms.
  • The Global Interconnection Index, Volume 4 (GXI Vol. 4), recently published by Equinix, found that traditional businesses are moving workloads to an edge-first architecture and COVID-19 is accelerating digital transformation in Asia-Pacific. It is predicted that Government & Education will lead traditional enterprises in their interconnection bandwidth growth rate as public and private initiatives drive a combined 47% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). This group is forecast to experience 4x the growth over the next four years as it adopts service provider best practices for digital infrastructure deployment.
  • The Canberra IBX, called CA1, located in the suburb of Mitchell, is a purpose-built data centre with a range of comprehensive security features which meet the stringent PSPF requirements and ASIO T4 Technical notes, making it ideal for government grade deployments.
  • Equinix is a Commonwealth Government Data Centre panel 2 accredited provider and supplies secure Data Centre services across the nation. Equinix has welcomed the Digital Transformation Agencies (DTA) hosting reforms and is progressing with being a continued accredited provider.
  • Equinix has a national footprint of 17 IBX data centres in Australia, spanning across Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane. When the PE3 facility opens later this year in Perth, that will increase to 18.
  • With more than 220 facilities across five continents, Platform Equinix enables organisations in Australia to connect to the world’s most important business markets quickly and easily, including financial centres and gateways to emerging economies. In Asia-Pacific, Equinix’s data centre footprint spans across key metros in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Singapore.

  • Guy Danskine, Managing Director, Equinix Australia

“The launch of Equinix Fabric in our Canberra facility is an important milestone for our Canberra based customers including government agencies, as security and flexibility are both defining elements of their cloud strategies. By deploying workloads within CA1 in proximity to the agency and on the ICON service, government organisations can enjoy even greater flexibility, because they can integrate multiple cloud providers seamlessly with other infrastructure capabilities to create hybrid environments while also streamlining information exchange at the highest levels of security across multiple agencies in Australia.”
