New Equinix Frankfurt data center supports companies’ digital infrastructure needs while advancing energy efficiency goals

FR13 provides businesses across industries access to a global digital ecosystem and is the company’s first new data center in Germany to be designed with an optimized operating temperature that reduces the site’s overall power consumption.

Nov 30, 2023

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, Germany – November 30, 2023 – Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the world's digital infrastructure company™, today opened its new International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center on the company’s North-East campus in Frankfurt. FR13 meets growing demand for private connectivity and digital infrastructure in Germany, thus supporting companies in their digital transformation and long-term business goals while implementing several measures to reduce the overall power consumption of the data center.

Equinix has invested a total of $104 million US dollars in the new building. The new facility delivers 1,125 cabinets of capacity and provides customers access to a rich industry ecosystem with more than 1,040 companies in Frankfurt and over 10,000 worldwide, hosting a dense variety of businesses from telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, pharmaceutical and automotive industries. Through a broad range of over 280 networks, clouds and services, businesses can interconnect directly with customers and partners in their digital supply chain.

FR13 features highly energy-efficient operations in line with Equinix’s global sustainability goals to be climate-neutral by 2030. FR13 will be the first IBX data center in Germany to run within a wider range of operating temperature and humidity from the beginning of operations. Typical operating temperature will be 27°C and this adjustment will lead to significantly less energy for cooling being needed to dissipate heat from IT equipment in the data center, making the facility’s cooling systems more efficient and contributing to reducing CO2 emissions and the data center’s PUE. This is also in line with the new Energy Efficiency Act in Germany, which contains specific PUE requirements.

As the initiative, announced in December 2022, is being rolled out across Equinix’s existing global data centers, the company estimates to see PUE improvements of up to 10% at locations across the company as a result of this energy efficiency measure. In addition to impacting the company’s own energy efficiency, the initiative is expected to help Equinix customers achieve their climate goals by reducing Scope 3 emissions in their supply chain. Equinix is the first colocation data center operator to announce its commitment to begin to define a multi-year global roadmap for thermal operations within its data centers aligned with the globally accepted limits of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) A1 Allowable standard.

In addition, the new facility is generally prepared to provide the heat for district heating projects. FR13 is also designed with the aim to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified and is planned to be covered by 100% renewable energy. To add to the building’s curb appeal, the street facing side was designed to resemble an office building and includes greened elements that underscore the sustainable core of the data center.

Jens-Peter Feidner, Managing Director for Germany at Equinix, said: “Data centers are not just places where data is stored; they provide the digital infrastructure on which our modern economy and society is built. The expansion of our North-East campus with FR13 is key to strengthening the digitalization of the Frankfurt and German economy, and providing reliable and secure data ecosystems that companies rely on to thrive in the digital landscape. This new data center also serves as a testament to our dedication to environmental innovation. FR13 is the first new data center to be opened with an optimized operating temperature, resulting in an improved PUE and lower energy consumption. With a planning & construction time of several years, you can imagine that we had already designed this long before the introduction of the new energy efficiency law in Germany. We look forward to partnering with businesses in Frankfurt to help them advance their digitisation projects, achieve their climate goals and innovate with confidence.”

At FR13, customers have access to the full range of data center, interconnection and digital infrastructure services. These include the software-defined Equinix Fabric™ service, which allows businesses to connect quickly and flexibly with leading cloud and network providers, and Network Edge, which allows customers to virtually modernize networks. The Equinix Metal™ automated bare metal service enables customers to configure and provision physical infrastructure within minutes.

FR13 is the latest addition to Equinix's Frankfurt North East Campus. This consists of a total of nine data centers, seven of which are retail colocation data centers (FR2.1-FR2.6, FR13) and two xScale data centers (FR9x, FR11x). FR13 is the first IBX facility to be opened in Germany since 2021, after opening FR8 at the city’s West campus.

Eugene Bergen Henegouwen, President EMEA, Equinix, added: “In today‘s digital age, data centers are not merely facilities; but they are the very foundation upon which business success is built, and more specifically Equinix plays the critica l role as the connectivity platform for the global digital world. As such environmental leadership is critical. Our commitment to providing robust and energy-efficient digital infrastructure in Frankfurt, Germany’s “Data Capital”, reflects our understanding of the pivotal role data centers play in powering businesses across industries, in the EMEA region and beyond.”
